Men’s Pairs Take Home the Gold Medal

The 2015 Asia Pacific Championships came to a close today for Team Canada with Ryan Bester and Steven Santana bringing home the gold medal in Men’s Pairs.
Ryan Bester of Hanover, Ontario and Steven Santana of North Vancouver, British Columbia defeated the 2014 Commonwealth Games silver medalists Muhammed Hizlee Abdhul Rais & Fairul Izean Abdhul Muin of Malaysia.
The Malaysian pairs started off very strong against Team Canada maintaining the lead for over half of the game. In the 14th end, with Canada down 12-8, Bester and Santana kicked it into high gear with a toucher by lead Santana on his first bowl. Skip Bester was able to convert Santana’s set up for a massive three points to narrow the gap to just one.
Another two points in the 15th end put Canada in the lead and the duo never looked back, playing five back to back outstanding ends. In the 17th Bester’s legendary drive shone and Canada picked up another three to widen their lead by five points. Malaysia never gave up but was unable to catch the momentum generated by Bester and Santana. The Canadians took it home in the 18th with a single for a final score of 18-12 and the gold medal.
The gold medal tops a fantastic week of bowls that saw Team Canada qualify in all eight disciplines for the 2016 World Bowls Championships. Team Canada was supported by Men’s Coach Robert North, Women’s Coach David Mathie, Team Manager Don Caswell and Team Leader Macky Singh.

The Asia Pacific Bowls Championships is a qualifier for the 2016World Bowls Championships. It is being hosted in Christchurch, New Zealand at Burnside and Papanui Bowls Clubs. With 19 countries in attendance, 17 will be competing for 8 spots in each discipline of men’s and women’s singles, pairs, triples and fours.
