In total, Canada’s Commonwealth athletes won 96 of Team Canada’s 131 medals (or 73%) in the Commonwealth Games sports contested at Toronto 2015.

This is a rich quadrennial of high performance sport for Canada’s summer athletes, offering the perfect continuum of major Games - Glasgow 2014 - Toronto 2015 and Rio 2016. The road to the 2016 Olympic Games went through Glasgow last year, has just concluded in Toronto, and lands in Rio de Janeiro next July.

“Commonwealth Games Canada is proud to see so many of our 2014 Commonwealth Games medallists reaching the podium once again, this time at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto,” said Richard Powers, President of Commonwealth Games Canada. “A large number of medallists in Toronto were also in Glasgow last year, and both Games are excellent preparation for the 2016 Olympic Games.”

Glasgow medallists repeating in Toronto included: gymnastics’ Ellie Black, who garnered 5 medals (3 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze), Ryan Cochrane with 3 medals (2 gold, 1 bronze), and Emily Overholt with 3 medals (1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze).

“Last year’s Glasgow Games were great preparation for me prior to these home Games in Toronto,” said Ellie Black who won gold on the beam, silver on vault, and bronze on floor at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. “There is no question that being a member of Team Canada 2014 contributed to my success in Toronto.”

Every four years, 71 participating countries, and over 4000 athletes, take part in the Commonwealth Games, which offer a valuable multi-sport opportunity for all Canadian athletes. The next Games will take place April 4 to 15, 2018 in Gold Coast, Australia.

Canada is the birthplace of the Commonwealth Games, with the British Empire Games first held in Hamilton in 1930. The Toronto 2015 Pan American Games are the first major multi-sport event to take place in the Golden Horseshoe since those Games. Commonwealth Games Canada expresses its congratulations to the 2015 Canadian Team for an inspiring and successful home games performance. CGC also congratulates the Games Organizing Committee, TORONTO 2015 on its great work in delivering excellent Games.
