Commonwealth Games Canada’s 3rd Annual Calgary “Game of Life”
CALGARY, AB (April 8, 2013) − On Sunday, April 14, 2013, the 3rd Annual “Game of Life” Run/Walk will be officially launched by Liz Gleadle — 2012 Olympic athlete, Canadian javelin record holder, and Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Team hopeful—and John Stanton, President of the Running Room.
“The Run/Walk provides a fantastic opportunity for everyone in Calgary—locals and visitors alike—to start spring by celebrating sport, health, and physical activity,” says Ms. Gleadle. “What better way to fundraise than with a scenic run along the Bow River?”
Organized by Commonwealth Games Canada (CGC) with the support of sponsors—the Running Room, Mizuno Canada, and PCL Construction—this locally run event has a definite global purpose with all proceeds going directly towards CGC’s grassroots sports programs in the Caribbean and Africa.
“Come join the Game of Life,” suggests Mr. Stanton. “Get off the sidelines and into the game of being an athlete yourself and supporting the Commonwealth Games Canada’s Bowling Out AIDS program."
The 10 km Run/Walk will start on April 14 at 10:00 a.m., followed by the start of the 5 km Run/Walk at 10:10 a.m. The start and finish lines are located outside the Eau Claire Market building. Participants will follow the Bow River pathway in an out-and-back route. The 1 km Kid’s Run will begin at 10:15 a.m. from the same location.
Each participant will receive a souvenir technical tee-shirt, breathable Mizuno® shoe bag, and a participant medal. There will also be prizes for the top male, female, and team finishers.
Registration for the “Game of Life” Run/Walk is available online from the Running Room website at www.runningroom.com until April 11, 2013. In-person registration will take place at the Running Room store in the Eau Claire Market, 200 Barclay Parade SW, on April 12 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on April 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., or on-site on race day from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m.
About Bowling Out AIDS
An estimated 240,000+ people—half of them women—are living with HIV in the Caribbean, making it the second-most affected region in the world after sub-Saharan Africa. Commonwealth Games Canada’s Bowling Out AIDS is a social development through sport program improving young Caribbean cricket players’ sport skills and their knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours around HIV/AIDS prevention. “The Bowling Out AIDS program is very important, since it improves cricket skills and young cricket players develop healthy lifestyles,” says Guyanese coach Vibert Johnson. In 2012, Commonwealth Games Canada’s Bowling Out AIDS program trained 338 coaches, reaching over 32,000 young cricket players in 7 Caribbean countries.
