Benfeito and Filion reach podium again at FINA World Series
DUBAI – Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal and Roseline Filion of Laval, Que., won the bronze medal Thursday to open the second stop on the FINA World Series diving circuit.
World champions Ruolin Chen and Huixia Liu of China took the gold medal for the second straight week with 337.56 points. Mun Yee Leong and Pandelela Rinong Pamg of Malaysia followed for silver at 314.64 and Benfeito and Filion, the Olympic bronze medallists in London, were third at 309.90.
Last week the Canadians finished ahead of the Malaysians for silver. Both teams improved their scores while the Chinese dropped 10 points. Filion said a mistake on their fourth dive potentially cost them a silver.
"Overall it was better than last week," said Filion. "Our synchronization was on and the other four dives in the final were good."
On women’s three-metre synchro, Tingmao Shi and Minxia Wu of China, also the reigning world champions, were the winners at 335.40. Arantxa Chavez and Laura Sanchez of Mexico were second at 286.50 and Tania Cagnotto and Francesca Dallape of Italy third at 279.30.
Jennifer Abel of Laval and Pamela Ware of Beloeil, Que., silver medallists last week, were fifth at 274.32.
Competition continues through to Sunday.
