Canada wins 4 medals on day 5 of track and field at the Commonwealth Games

OTTAWA - Four more medals were added to the count today bringing the track and field total to 11 in Delhi. In the women’s long jump two athletes stood on the podium together as Alice Falaiye of Brampton, ON won the gold with 6.50 metres while Pickering’s Tabia Charles won bronze with 6.44 metres. This was Tabia’s second medal at these games earlier winning the triple jump bronze. In the high jump Nicole Forrester claimed gold by winning a jump off at 1.91 metres. Guelph’s Josh Cassidy took bronze in the T54 wheelchair classification 1500 metres in 3:21.14.

Also in action today New Haven, PEI’s Jared Connaughton finished in 4th in the 200 metre final running 20.68 seconds. Earlier in the day he won his semi-final in 20.65 seconds to advance to the final.

Jean-Paul Compaore of Sherbrooke, QC placed 5th in the T54 1500 metre final in 3:21.45. Jillian Drouin of Corunna, ON placed 6th with a mark of 1.78 metres in the high jump. In the women’s long jump Coquitlam, BC’s Ruky Abdulai finished in 10th with a jump of 6.13 metres.

Advancing to the finals

Halifax’s Adrienne Power advanced to the 200 metre final which has been delayed and will run tomorrow. She secured her spot by running 23.59, placing her third in her semi-final.

Angela Whyte of Edmonton, AB won her semi-final heat running 13.09; the 100 metre hurdles final takes place tomorrow at 8:05am (Eastern Time).

Victoria, BC’s Diane Cummins time of 2:02.25 was good enough to qualify for the 800 metre final tomorrow at 9:10am ET; she placed third in her semi-final.
