Commonwealth Games Canada Congratulates New Ministers of Sport and International Development

CGC urges new Government of Canada to continue support of sport, major games hosting and international sport development

NOVEMBER 4, 2015, OTTAWA – Commonwealth Games Canada (CGC) congratulates the Liberal Federal Government on its appointment of Carla Qualtrough as Minister of Sport and Persons with a Disability, as well as Marie-Claude Bibeau as Minister of International Development. “Congratulations to Ministers Qualtrough and Bibeau on their appointments”, said Richard Powers, President of Commonwealth Games Canada. “We look forward to working closely with both Ministers in advancing sport and the Commonwealth in Canada and abroad. We know that sport and Games have transformational impacts and effect positive change on our citizens and our communities, and we will work with the Government in achieving its objectives in this area.”

The Liberal government’s support of sport was well articulated in its election platform, and the CGC looks forward to working with Ministers Qualtrough and Bibeau over the next few years on the government’s objectives of supporting high performance sport as well as hosting major games. CGC is particularly pleased that the area of international sport development was also included in the platform – the CGC has long been a leader in this area and continues to build a better Commonwealth through sport.

As the founder and four-time host of the Commonwealth Games (1930, 1954, 1978, 1994), Canada is considered one of the leading Commonwealth sport nations, and CGC expects Canada will once again bid to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games.  The Pan Am Games last summer proved that hosting major international games has a positive impact on Canadian pride, participation in sport and sporting infrastructure in the host communities.

On foreign policy, CGC supports the Government’s plan to rebuild relationships with international multilateral organizations, including the Commonwealth Secretariat. In addition to hosting major games and international sport development programs, Canada has also been a leader within this Secretariat. We congratulate Prime Minister Trudeau on his decision to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malta at the end of this month – this is an important forum and the Prime Minister’s attendance will make a strong statement in support of Canada’s history and leadership among the Commonwealth nations.

CGC looks forward to meeting with both Ministers in the coming weeks to discuss areas of mutual interest and also to provide support and information as needed.
