Five medals, national record for Canadians at World Cup

BERLIN, August, 11, 2013– Canadian swimmers enjoyed their best day so far on the 2013 FINA World Cup swimming circuit with a silver and four bronze medals to conclude the second stop.

Sandrine Mainville of Montreal collected two bronze including a Canadian short course record in the women’s 100-m freestyle clocking 52.41 seconds. That eclipsed the previous national mark of 52.51 set by two-time Olympian Victoria Poon of Montreal in 2010.

Two Dutch swimmers finished ahead of Mainville. Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands was first in 51.28 with her compatriot Femke Heemskerk second in 52.20.  Chantal van Landeghem of Winnipeg was fifth in 52.87.

In the 50-m butterfly, Ilaria Bianchi of Italy fended off two Canadians for the gold in 25.62. Katerine Savard of Pont-Rouge, Que., was second in 25.93 and Mainville third in 26.04.

Canada’s other bronze medals were earned by Martha McCabe of Toronto in the 200-m breaststroke and Audrey Lacroix of Pont-Rouge in the 200-m butterfly. Savard was also sixth in the 200 fly.

Hilary Caldwell of White Rock, B.C., was fifth in the 100-m backstroke. On the men’ side, Russell Wood of Calgary was sixth in the 200-m backstroke and seventh in the 50-m backstroke and Coleman Allen of Vancouver was fifth in the 100-m butterfly.

In the 4x50-m mixed medley relay Canada was fourth with Chris Manning of Brantford, Ont., Luke Peddie of Edmonton, van Landeghem and Mainville; sixth with Tommy Gossland of Vancouver, Joel Greenshields of Lethbridge, Alta., Savard and Lacroix and seventh with Coleman, Blake Worsley of Victoria, McCabe and Caldwell.

The next stop on the circuit is October 12-13 in Moscow.
