TONYA VERBEEK JOINS WRESTLING CANADA AS TALENT IDENTIFICATION COACH

(Ottawa, ON – May 15, 2013) Wrestling Canada is pleased to announce that three-time Olympic medalist Tonya Verbeek has been named as Talent Identification Coach for the organization.

Verbeek, a multiple World Championships and Olympic medalist, and Level 3 NCCP certified coach, has served as the Women’s Assistant Coach at the Brock Wrestling Club, one of Canada’s top wrestling programs, for the last six years.

“The addition of Tonya to our National Team program will be of significant importance for the long-term success of Canada, for both men and women wrestling. She not only brings her invaluable experience as a world-class wrestler, but she also bring value as a certified and experienced coach,” said Tamara Medwidsky, executive director of Wrestling Canada. “We are thrilled to see, time after time, our athletes continuing to give back to wrestling at the end of their careers. This is a testament to passion for wrestling within the sport.”

“I am excited and honored to be trusted with this new opportunity to find wrestling talent in Canada, among our youth programs. To stay within Canada and share my experiences with our up-and-coming wrestling talent, and to further grow wrestling in the country that has given me so much in my athletic career was important to me,” said Tonya Verbeek, who is Canada’s most prolific wrestler, winning three Olympic Games medals, and one of only five summer athletes to win medals in three consecutive Olympic Games in the of Canadian Olympic history.

As Talent Identification Coach, Verbeek will be responsible for the development, planning, administration and implementation of Wrestling Canada’s high performance talent identification system and working with the High Performance coaches and personal coaches to improve the vertical integration of our identified athletes in the High Performance Athlete Pathway.

Verbeek begins her duties on May 21st, 2013.
