Weightlifting: Marie-Ève Beauchemin-Nadeau Wins Gold
Competing in the 75kg group today in Glasgow, 2012 Olympian Marie-Eve Beauchemin-Nadeau was the 2010 Commonwealth Games silver medalist for Canada. A University of Sherbrooke student, her personal best is 251kg and with an entry total of 240kg she was a heavy favourite within this weight-class.
For the snatch portion of the competition, Beauchemin-Nadeau lifted the most weight with 110kg. Her closest competitor was Mary Opeloge of Samoa who lifted 109kg. In the clean and jerk portion, Beauchemin-Nadeau lifted 133kg, then 137kg and then 140kg breaking the Commonwealth record for her weight-class in the clean and jerk. When asked, she says she knew it was possible.
"I knew the record was attainable, and I knew that I was aiming for it even on the first lift. I was prepared for this," said Beauchemin-Nadeau.
The new gold medallist was happy with her solid performance to earn the gold.
"It was a great afternoon. I was very happy with my performances. My preparation for the competition was quite hard, but I worked a lot over the last couple of weeks," said Beauchemin-Nadeau. "I was aiming for the record and for the gold medal, and I'm very happy I've got both. I've built up my confidence with this competition. Six out of six international competitions is quite hard to do."
