Triathlon Team Brings Experience and Excitement to the Starting Line
Triathlon requires its competitors to become masters of three very different endurance disciplines, making it one of the most physically demanding events in the world.
Eight athletes will be representing Canada in triathlon and para triathlon events during the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Competition kicks off with the men’s race on Friday, July 29th.
The Canadian men’s triathlon team consists of Tyler Mislawchuk (Oak Bluff, MB), Martin Sobey (Charlottetown, PEI), and Charles Paquet (Port-Cartier, QC). The triathlon women’s team athletes include, Amélie Kretz (Blainville, QC), Emy Legault (Ile Perrot, QC), and Dominika Jamnicky (Guelph, ON). Canada is also proud to cheer on Jessica Tuomela (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) and her guide Emma Skaug (Victoria, BC) in the women’s para triathlon event. See Team Canada 2022 media guide for complete bios.
These talented athletes are hoping to put themselves in a position to step up on the Commonwealth Games podium. They will be led by coaches, Marc-Antoine Christin (Montreal, QC) and Carolyn Murray (Edmonton, AB).
In the men’s individual race, we will see Martin Sobey, Charles Paquet, and Tyler Mislawchuk wearing the maple leaf for Canada.
Tyler Mislawchuk finished 15th at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. He will draw upon this and his other international experiences during the 2022 Commonwealth Games which will be his fifth multi-sport games.
“It’s always an honour to represent my country at a major Games,” says Mislawchuk. “My goal is to climb on the podium individually as well as with my teammates.”
Mislawchuk also reflected on his experience interacting with the volunteers at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, where he finished 12th.
“It’s always a pleasure to interact with the hard-working friendly volunteers and realize this doesn’t happen without them.”
For the women’s individual race, Amélie Kretz, Emy Legault, and Dominika Jamnicky, are ready to step up to the starting line and make Canada proud.
Dominika Jamnicky is very familiar with international competition and will be making her second appearance at the Commonwealth Games. After her 14th place finish at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, she is coming to Birmingham with very clear goals.
“I’d love to improve from my performance from the 2018 Gold Coast Games. I’ve prepared for this moment. When I toe the line, I’m ready to give it my best,” says Jamnicky.
Her teammate, Emy Legault has had a breakthrough season and recently achieved a career-best 12th place finish at the World Triathlon Sprint Championships in Montreal. She brings excitement to the team as Birmingham will be her first major multi-sport event.
“Even though I can race against these women all year long, the Commonwealth Games only happens once every four years, so it does feel a little different and special,” says Legault. “It will be my first ever major games so I really want to soak in all the experience and knowledge I can get from these Games.”
Para triathlete, Jessica Tuomela and her guide Emma Skaug, will be writing history as the first Canadians to compete in the para triathlon event at a Commonwealth Games. This duo will move through the course together and hope to race to the best of their abilities after experiencing a few health-related setbacks leading up to the Games.
“As Jessica’s guide my main goal is to create a space where Jessica can feel strong and confident to be able to race to the best of her ability,” says Skaug. “That involves trust, communication and understanding between the two of us.”
The triathlon competition for the 2022 Commonwealth Games begins Friday July 29th at Sutton Park. Both the men’s and women’s individual races will take place on Friday, July 29th followed by the mixed relay team race and the women’s para triathlon races on Sunday, July 31st.
