In addition to the maple leaf, Canada’s 2026 Commonwealth Games team is competing under the banner of Mighty, Together.
How Canadian. Mighty, Together sounds and feels like it could be part of the lyrics of O Canada.
Fierce and friendly, strong and supportive, toughness and teamwork … these are apt descriptors of a country known for achieving so much on the international scene, minus some of the less-healthy parts of competition.
Make no mistake, Team Canada is mighty in athletics. This year’s lineup includes World, Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth champions and medallists. Canada is always a powerhouse at Commonwealth Games, sitting third all-time in the medal standings.
Don’t underestimate the togetherness of the squad. The inclusion of para athletics events in the Commonwealth program is not new anymore. Neither is the integration of para athletes with their Olympic program teammates.
Over the six days of track & field events in Glasgow, Scotland, Canada’s athletics team will demonstrate the mightiness and togetherness promised by Team Canada’s motto.
COMMONWEALTH PODIUM PEDIGREE
Three gold medallists from the 2022 Commonwealth Games are back in action this year. Evan Dunfee will defend his men’s 10,000 metres crown from Birmingham. Camryn Rogers is looking to repeat as women’s hammer throw champion this year. Sarah Mitton looks to do the same in the women’s shot put event.
“Being in a stadium with 30,000 people in it, competing is so different for us. It’s huge motivation and to be part of such a great team. It's going to be a lot of fun and I'm really looking forward to it,” Dunfee said.
Ethan Katzberg looks to improve on his silver medal performance at these Games four years ago. Jillian Weir came home with Birmingham bronze and is back for more this year. Zach Gingras is also back on the starting line after winning bronze in the men’s T37/38 100 metres.
“The Commonwealth Games are so unique for Paralympic athletes such as myself, as we are integrated into the program alongside our Olympic counterparts. The entire experience is so one-of-a-kind and helps us create relationships and bonds outside of our typical crowd, which will last beyond the closing ceremonies,” Gingras said.
This team’s Commonwealth Games resume stretches beyond the last Games. Mohammed Ahmed owns 2018 silver medals in both the 5000 metres and 10000 metres, putting only one medal shy of Alex Wilson and Angela Chalmers for the most by a Canadian in athletics.
Damian Warner won Commonwealth gold in the 2014 men’s decathlon and Aaron Brown is a 2018 silver medallist in the men’s 200 metres.
THROW CANADA
While Rogers, Katzberg, Mitton and Weir added some shiny medals to their sparkling international resumes, the team of Canadian athletes competing in throwing events is deep.
Para athletes Addisyn Franceschini, Christel Robichaud, Maitlan Knoke and Claire Norek are looking to make their names on the international throws scene with big performances in Glasgow.
Rowan Hamilton and Jinaye Shomachuk are looking to join the list of Canadian hammer throwers on top of the world. Jenna Tunks has seen what Commonwealth Games medals look like – her father Jason Tunks owns two silver medals and a bronze from his own Commonwealth Games discus career.
BACK ON TRACK
Some track athletes need no introduction. With multiple World and Olympic medals apiece, we know that Aaron Brown, Jerome Blake, Brendon Rodney and Andre De Grasse are contenders every time they step onto a track.
“Having all those guys, we're contenders. We're gold medalist contenders. So, I’m looking forward to that,” De Grasse said.
They are far from the only stars on this squad. Speed demons like Audrey Leduc and Sade McCreath keep lowering the Canadian women’s 100 metres record. Christopher Morales Williams has a fresh set of gold 400 metres medals from the 2026 World Indoor Championships and the 2026 Canadian Track & Field Championships.
Chloe Dunbar, Duan Asemota, Eliezer Adjibi, Frédérique Chiasson, Gabrielle Cole, Lauren Gale, George Quarcoo with Segun Makinde, Natalie Thirsk, Sheriauna Haase – there are a lot of fast times on this list.
Up the distance and you get into Mohammed Ahmed’s wheelhouse, as well as those of Olympian sisters Gabriela DeBues-Stafford and Lucia Stafford. Look out for Abdullahi Hassan, Austin Cole, Florence Caron, Foster Malleck, Justin O’Toole, Justyn Knight, Kate Current, Kieran Lumb, Maeliss Trapeau, Max Davies, Nicole McKenzie, Simone Plourde, Michael Barber, and Nandini Sharma once they get a full head of steam.
Steeplechasers Jean-Simon Desgagnés, Aaron Ahl, Grace Fetherstonhaugh and Katelyn Stewart-Barnett, and hurdlers Brooke Overholt, David Moulongou, Mariam Abdul-Rashid, Savannah Sutherland and Tatiana Aholou will overcome all obstacles in Glasgow.
MULTI-EVENT WARRIORS AND SUPER JUMPERS
Olympic champion Damian Warner is back at the Commonwealth Games, grinding through 10 events in the men’s decathlon. Hannah Blair and Sienna MacDonald will traverse seven gruelling events in the women’s heptathlon and MacDonald will also compete in the women’s long jump event.
Para Worlds medallist Noah Vucsics and Izzy Goudros will take to the air in the long jump, while Marguerite Lorenzo flies into the high jump, and Jennifer Elizarov soars in the pole vault.
