Flash Quotes - Weightlifter Jean-Marc Beland Finishes First in his Group B
Jean-Marc Béland, competing in Glasgow in the 77kg weight category in weightlifting, was one of the last to lift within the snatch portion of the competition in group B. His first attempt was at 131kg which he lifted confidently. He then asked for the weight to be increased to 136kg which he again lifted confidently. On his third lift it automatically went to 137kg but he again asked for the weight to be increased to 138kg, and again, lifted with a confidence and ended with a big smile of satisfaction with the weights held high in the air.
In the clean and jerk portion, Béland, from Greenfield Park Quebec, lifted 157kg on his first attempt and then was unsuccessful at 162kg for his second two attempts. Beland finished first in his group B with 295kg, seven kg higher than Toua Udia of Papaua New Guinea.
Following his competition, Beland was all smiles coming out on top of his group.
“I am happy with my performance,” said Béland. “I would have liked to have reached 300kg but I can be proud of 295kg. This weightlifting competition at these Games is a big competition, and 138kg is a new personal best for me in the snatch.”
The final weightlifting rankings for the 77kg competition will be available after the group A competition this evening.
