Canadians off the courts – for now – at Scotstoun Sports Complex

The maple leaf will take a pause from competition at Scotstoun Sports Complex for the next few days. Home to both squash and table tennis, Canadians have been knocked out of the events in progress in both sports and are now awaiting their next events.

In women’s table tennis quarterfinals Saturday morning, it took just an hour for No. 1 ranked Singapore to defeat the Canadian team 3-0 (3:0, 3:0, 3:0). The Canadian team is Betty Guo (Edmonton, Alta.), Anqi Luo (Mississauga, Ont.) and Mo Zhang (Vancouver, B.C.).

“We got a very bad draw to play Singapore, as the no.1 seed and extremely strong team,” said coach Junya Chen. “We hope that we can do something in the other events.”

Canada’s men’s table tennis team was eliminated Friday in preliminary rounds. Both men’s and women’s table tennis squads now have a few days off before singles competition begins July 29, mixed doubles begins July 30 and men’s and women’s doubles begin July 31.

Squash competition will resume for Canadians Samantha Cornett and Shawn Delierre with mixed doubles pool play on Wed. July 30 v. India and Thurs. July 31 v. Sri Lanka. Earlier in the Games Cornett made the Round of 16 in women’s singles while Delierre made the men’s singles Round of 32.
