Commonwealth Sport Canada (CSC) is proud to announce that Bruce Robertson (Manotick, ON) has received the organization’s Award of Merit, in recognition of his exemplary volunteer service with CSC. This Award recognizes an individual who has made distinguished, lasting and valuable contributions to furthering the aims and objectives of Commonwealth Sport Canada and the Commonwealth Games Foundation of Canada (CGFC), both domestically and internationally.

A long time leader within the CSC and Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), Bruce Robertson has served on the CSC Board in various capacities, including those of Vice-President, Treasurer, and ex-officio member. He has also been President, Board Member, and Treasurer of the Commonwealth Games Foundation of Canada in addition to chairing the CSC’s International Development through Sport (IDS) Advisory Committee.

Internationally, Bruce has served the CGF as both a Vice President and Regional Vice President for the Americas Region. He chairs the CGF Sports Committee and is a member of the Audit and Risk Committee. He was also Chair of the CGF Co-ordination Commission for the Gold Coast 2018, Glasgow 2014, and Melbourne 2006 Games and was a member of the Co-ordination Commissions for Delhi 2010 and Manchester 2002. David Grevemberg, CEO of the CGF notes: “It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Bruce over many years. I cannot think of another person that is more deserving of this volunteer excellence award.”

Bruce is known professionally for his excellent project management skills as a systems consultant throughout North America. His earlier professional experience included postings in Dusseldorf, Germany and Toronto with a major international consulting firm.

A competitive swimmer, Bruce won 16 medals for Canada in international competitions including the 1972 Olympic Games (silver and bronze medals), the 1973 World Aquatic Championships (gold and bronze medals), and the 1974 Commonwealth Games (2 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze medals).  In recognition of his athletic accomplishments, he was named Canada’s Male Athlete of the Year in 1973, was awarded the Order of Canada in 1974 and is a member of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame, the British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame and the Canadian Aquatic Hall of Fame.  In 2018, he received the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers recognizing contributions made to the Commonwealth Sport Movement through his work with Commonwealth Games Canada and the Commonwealth Games Federation.

“It is difficult to put together enough words to fully explain all that Bruce has done and continues to do, not just for Commonwealth Sport Canada, but also the Commonwealth Games Foundation of Canada and the Commonwealth Games Federation internationally”, said Richard Powers, CSC President. “He is recognized around the globe for his dedication to the Commonwealth sport movement and we are privileged to benefit from his continued involvement and leadership within CSC.”

Andrew Pipe, former President of the CSC also congratulated Bruce on his Award: “There is no one in the Commonwealth Games Movement in Canada or internationally that deserves this award more than Bruce Robertson. While his accomplishments are the stuff of legend, it’s also important to recognize that he has made unbelievable and untiring contributions through his work. The success of Commonwealth Games on virtually every continent over the past several decades is due to the kind of leadership and energy that he has brought.”

The Canadian Commonwealth Sport Awards were announced during CSC’s Annual General Meeting, which was held on September 20th, 2020.
