CGC Appoints Carla Thachuk as Manager of International Programs

CGC is pleased to announce the appointment of Carla Thachuk to the position of Manager of International Programs within the ‘International Development through Sport (IDS) ’ Unit of Commonwealth Games Canada. A native of Edmonton and graduate of the University of Alberta, Carla possesses a Masters Degree in Sport for International Development from Memorial University and brings a wealth of international experience that makes her uniquely suited to this position. 

Carla spent three years with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees based in Geneva, where she was engaged in building ‘sport for refugee development’ programs, developing partnerships with international foundations and international sport organizations, and creating highly successful fund raising initiatives.  As a Project Coordinator with ‘Right to Play’ in Guinea and Sierra Leone, Carla managed large scale projects related to the creation and delivery of sport and recreational opportunities for children, major sporting events, health education and HIV/AIDS workshops, and coach training while coordinating activities with multiple partner organizations, local governments and community members.  She also worked with Youth Challenge International in Guyana directing the learning process of international participants and the development of alternative educational streams.

CGC would also like to acknowledge the ongoing hard work and motivation of Hannah Juneau who continues to lead the CSLC program and will take on new program and partnership responsibilities including the new CGA Capacity Support Program in partnership with CGF.

We would like to thank Dr. Colin Higgs for his strong leadership of the IDS unit over the past 10 Months. During his tenure, Colin successfully helped clarify the vision and direction of the IDS programs and strengthen communications with international agencies and funding partners. Colin will remain involved with IDS in a consultative role. We would also like to thank Steve Parker, Kieran Hayward & Seodhna Keown for their contributions to CGC international programs.

As IDS move into its 16th year we will be exploring new approaches to engage Canadians in our work and looking at bridging development through sport and development of sport using best practice program development.
