Andrew Pipe Re-elected to Second Term as Commonwealth Games Canada President

January 19, 2010 (Ottawa) – Dr. Andrew Pipe has been re-elected for a second, four-year term as President of Commonwealth Games Canada (CGC). He was the unanimous choice of delegates to the organization’s Annual General Meeting in Toronto.

“I am so grateful for the confidence that Commonwealth Games Canada and its sport partners have shown in me,” said Dr. Pipe, following the January 17 vote.

“We have an extraordinary year ahead of us: we continue to expand the innovative work of our International Development through Sport (IDS) unit, as well as complete the exhaustive planning for the Delhi Commonwealth Games in October,” Dr. Pipe continued. “I am committed to working hand-in-hand with our national sport organizations, our partner agencies, as well as the Delhi Organizing Committee and the Commonwealth Games Federation, to ensure an exceptional Games experience for our Canadian athletes.”

Delegates from across Canada and the Commonwealth attended the meeting, including Michael Fennell, President of the Commonwealth Games Federation. In his formal remarks to delegates, Mr. Fennell thanked CGC for its longstanding commitment to sport and international development. He also provided a wide-ranging update on preparations for the Delhi Games in October.

“This year’s Commonwealth Games are going to be nothing short of spectacular, and we are looking forward to what is certain to be a world-class competition in a remarkable collection of new venues,” said Mr. Fennell. “I am also happy to report that the Government of India and Games organizers have made security planning a top priority, and everything that can be done is being done to ensure that athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators are properly protected.”

Delegates at this year’s AGM also voted unanimously to send an enthusiastic message of congratulations and good luck to all Canadian athletes competing at the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver and Whistler.
