GLASGOW, Scotland – Canada finished just shy of adding to its medal haul on two occasions Monday as Ella Jansen and Jack Gill chalked up fourth-place results to lead the Canadians in the pool at the Commonwealth Games.
Jansen, of Burlington, Ont., (Etobicoke Swim Club) delivered a strong swim in the women's 400-metre individual medley, finishing fourth in a time of 4:39.12.
Julie Brousseau (Nepean Kanata Barracudas) also reached the final, placing sixth in 4:45.43. Australia's Jenna Forrester claimed the gold medal in 4:31.19.
Jack Gill, of Brockville, Ont. came within striking distance of his second podium of the meet after touching the wall fourth at 1:12.79 in the men's Para swimming SB9 100-metre breaststroke competition.
Australia's Beau Matthews captured gold in 1:09.41. Canadian teammate Fernando Lu was disqualified.
A Canadian foursome of Julie Brousseau, Madison Kryger (Madison Kryger (Niagara, Ont. – HPC Ontario/Brock Niagara Aquatics), Delia Lloyd (Etobicoke Swim Club) and Ella Jansen also teamed up for a fifth-place finish in the women’s the 4x200-metre freestyle relay. The Canadian quartet combined for a time of 8:07.07. Australia took the gold medal in 7:42.53.
Oliver Dawson, of Grand Prairie, Alta., added a seventh-place finish in the men's 50-metre breaststroke, clocking-in at 27.42 seconds. Toronto’s Ben Loewen placed sixth in the men's 200-metre butterfly in 1:57.77.
Meanwhile, Kylie Masse led all qualifiers in the women’s 50-metre backstroke semifinals. The five-time Olympic medallist from Toronto will be focused on taking her 11th career Commonwealth Games medal on Tuesday.
“I’m super pleased. I just wanted to progress from this morning’s swim, and I’ll try to be faster tomorrow,” said Masse, who clocked a time at 27.57 “For me, (results) it’s a symbol of resilience and perseverance. I’m thrilled to be here and race against the best. That’s what I love to do, and I want to show my best.”
Josh Liendo will also be back on the starting blocks Tuesday evening for the men’s 100-metre freestyle final with his eyes squarely focused on a second gold medal. The Torontonian placed second in his heat with a time of 48.20.
“This gets me in the middle lane. I’m in a good spot. I just need to give it a go now,” said Liendo. “I need to just rest now, reset, calm down and get some sleep.”
The Canadian swim team is comprised of 12 Olympic Program and 12 Paralympic Program athletes at the Commonwealth Games, which are a unique among major international multi-sport events, bringing Olympic and Paralympic stream athletes together as one integrated team, creating an environment that has become one of the defining characteristics of the Commonwealth movement.
The swimming competition runs July 24-29. Glasgow 2026 will welcome approximately 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories competing across 10 sports, including six Para sports.
