SportWORKS Projects
Commonwealth Games Canada has been involved in over 125 sport for development and sport development projects in over 30 countries around the world. Brief summaries of some of these projects are given below which includes: their geographic location, partners involved, and the associated CGC initiative.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development highlights sport as “an important enabler of sustainable development”. It recognizes the growing contribution of sport to the realization of development and peace in its promotion of tolerance and respect, and the contributions it makes to the empowerment of women and girls, young people, individuals, and communities, as well as to health, education, gender equality and social inclusion objectives. Thanks to the generous support of the Government and Canada and our other donors, CGC is proud to be one of the world’s pioneers of international sport for development and sport development work.

Women & Sport Botswana Organization (WASBO)

CGC helped with Women and Sport Botswana Organization’s (WASBO) development, program implementation, and advocacy work. This organization helped increase access for women and girls to physical activity and sport programs throughout the country.

CGC was responsible for designing and implementing a sports program which focused on women’s rights, nutrition, body image and family needs, working closely with the Ministry of Sport and Education.

Working with SCORE, CGC helped implement a Women in Sport program involving community and youth sports initiative and activities tailored to girls and young women.
Women in Sport (WIS) Association- Sri Lanka

CGC facilitated the creation of a Women in Sports Association in a country where cultural traditions discourage female involvement in sport. In support of this CGC staff helped strengthen the Sri Lanka Olympic Committee’s administrative and technical capacity, and facilitated the donation of resources (e.g. vehicle, computer, fax machine, etc.).

WIS was formed with the support of the Turks and Caicos government and the local Commonwealth Games Association to increase coaching and sport administration opportunities for girls and women. CGC worked with the national executive of the association to help develop a strategic plan as well as engaged local leaders to encourage the creation of grass roots programs to increase women and girls’ sports participation.
