Statement from Commonwealth Sport Canada on the Future of Sport in Canada Commission’s Final Report
March 24, 2026
Commonwealth Sport Canada (CSC) welcomes the release of the Future of Sport in Canada Commission’s Final Report and commends the Commissioner and advisory team for undertaking one of the most comprehensive reviews of Canada’s sport system in a generation.
This process, grounded in extensive national consultation, engagement with athletes, and rigorous analysis, reflects the urgency felt across the sport community to strengthen a system that is safe, inclusive, and fit for the future. The Commission’s work builds on a significant body of evidence and input from stakeholders across the country, highlighting both the challenges and the opportunity to reimagine sport in Canada.
CSC strongly supports the Report’s emphasis on:
-
Safe sport and athlete well-being as foundational to all participation and performance,
-
Modernized governance and accountability, including clearer roles and stronger system alignment,
-
Sustainable and equitable funding models that enable access from grassroots to high performance, and
-
Inclusion, reconciliation, and diversity, ensuring sport reflects the full breadth of Canadian society.
As an organization committed to the development of sport, and using sport for development, from community to podium, and to continuing Canada’s leadership within the global Commonwealth sport movement, CSC believes the Report provides a critical roadmap at a pivotal moment. With the momentum of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Games and ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Canada has a unique opportunity to translate these recommendations into meaningful, lasting change.
CSC encourages the Government of Canada to move swiftly toward implementation, in close partnership with national sport organizations, provinces and territories, Indigenous partners, and the broader sport community. The success of this effort will depend not only on policy change, but on sustained collaboration, resourcing, and accountability.
Commonwealth Sport Canada stands ready to support this next phase of nation-building through sport, ensuring that the system better serves athletes, strengthens communities, and reflects the values Canadians expect of sport at every level.
