Canadian Sport Institute Ontario and Commonwealth Sport Canada Welcome The Queen’s Baton Relay Ahead of the 2022 Commonwealth Games
TORONTO (May 27th, 2022) – Canadian Sport Institute Ontario (CSIO) was honoured to welcome The Queen’s Baton Relay to CSIO ahead of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. This was one of only a few Canadian stops for The Queen’s Baton, as it makes its journey to all 72 Commonwealth Nations and Territories ahead of the 2022 Games.
The Queen’s Baton was welcomed by a group of high performance athletes training at CSIO - all of whom who have either been named to Team Canada or are hopefuls to represent Canada at Birmingham 2022. The group included national team athletes from athletics, para athletics, swimming and wheelchair basketball.
Also on hand to welcome the Queen’s Baton was MP Jean Yip (Scarborough - Agincourt), guests from the University of Birmingham, and many of Commonwealth Sport Canada and CSIO’s staff and partners. The event was emceed by Team Canada 2022 co-Chefs de Missions, Claire Carver-Dias and Sam Effah.
Similar to an Olympic torch relay, the Queen's Baton Relay is a relay around the world held prior to the beginning of each Commonwealth Games. A tradition since 1958, the Baton Relay began on October 7, 2021, with Her Majesty The Queen placing her Message to the Commonwealth into the Baton. The Queen’s Baton is now on its 294-day long journey to every corner of the Commonwealth where it strives to ignite hope, solidarity and collaboration, as it connects communities, embraces unique cultures, and shares inspirational stories.
Following a formal media event, the athletes training at CSIO, as well as CSIO staff, got to see the Queen’s Baton up-close and have their photo taken with the inspirational object. The Baton itself is entwined with unique components that display connectivity and represent the power of collaboration - cornerstones of CSIO’s team-based approach to elevating people and performances.
CSIO is delighted that six of its sport science and sport medicine practitioners will be in Birmingham to provide best-in-class support to Team Canada athletes as they compete at the Games.
