For the first time in history, Canada will send a full-delegation of athletes between the ages of 15 and 18 to the Commonwealth Youth Games.

Over 1300 athletes from 71 Commonwealth member nations and territories will compete in nine sports during the seven day event: Athletics, badminton, boxing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, tennis, weightlifting and wrestling. Canada will be competing in all of the sports with the exception of tennis and swimming.

“While these games will provide our up and coming stars with an excellent international competition, it will also serve as a training ground for some of these athletes and coaches who will go on to compete at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India and the 2012 Olympics in London, England,” said Scott Stevenson, Director of Sport with Commonwealth Games Canada.

The athletes will be supported by a mission team of 12 made up of CGC staff and ten volunteers who will work around the clock to meet the needs of Team Canada. 18 other coaches and support staff have been appointed by the various national sports governing bodies to ensure that Canadian athletes have the opportunity to reach their potential while in India.

“We are delighted to be able to send such an outstanding team of young athletes to India,” said Chef de Mission Shawnee Scatliff. “Our athletes and mission team have a breadth of experience at national and international level and we look forward to seeing them represent Canada with distinction in Pune.”
