Canada Wins First Athletics Gold and Kyle Pettey Sets Shot Put World-record

(October 7, 2010) Para-athlete Kyle Pettey (Brampton, ON) won Canada’s first gold medal in athletics in the F34 shot put event, setting a World Record. Bronze medallist at the Beijing Paralympics in 2008, he always dreamed of owning the world record in the shot put and discus throw. One of those dreams came true today at the Delhi Commonwealth Games. The twenty-four-year-old threw for 11.44 m, beating his previous personal best of 11.24 m.
On winning Gold and setting a new world record: ‘’I feel awesome. My first three throws were not what I would have hoped for but I reloaded and (coach) Dave Greig pushed me really hard. It’s my first major win. I have come second or third at other events and now it’s all come together in a major games," said Pettey after his win.
Daniel James West (England) won Silver and Hamish Macdonald (Australia) won Bronze.
