Pune 2008: Ruel sets record, wins silver

Pune, India - Jessica Ruel of La Sarre, Que. set a Games record in the clean and jerk en route to a silver medal in the women’s 48-kg weightlifting event Monday at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India.

The 17-year old Ruel became the first ever Quebec resident to win a Youth Games medal lifting 61-kg in the snatch and 77-kg in the clean and jerk to finish with a total of 138-kg, two behind gold medalist Diksha Gaitwad of India.

“This was the first time that I have been in the medal round of a competition and am ecstatic about the record and the medal,” said Ruel. “I found this competition to be a little slower than I am used to, but I was able to adjust and on my final attempt in the jerk I set the record.”
