Pune 2008: Day 5 highlights

2008 CYG - What Canada did Friday at the Commonwealth Youth Games (distances in metres unless specified):

Canada wrapped up competition at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games with four more medals, two gold and two silvers, to bring the total medal count to 26.

Canada won a medal in every sport that it entered at the Games and finishes fifth in the total medal count behind India with 74 (33 gold, 25 silver, 16 bronze), Australia with 64 (24 gold, 19 silver, 21 bronze), England with 41 (18 gold, nine silver, 14 bronze) and South Africa with 29 (seven gold, 13 silver, nine bronze).

“We are very proud of our athlete’s performance at the Games,” said
Canadian chef de mission Shawnee Scatliff. “We won medals in each sport that we entered, our athletes set many personal bests and more importantly, the team gelled together which bodes well for our nation at future multi-sport games.”

Friday’s highlights include:

Women’s doubles _ Alexandra Bruce, Toronto, and Michelle Li, Richmond Hill, Ont., fell 2-0 (18-21, 8-21) to the second seeded team from India in the final.  “This just wasn’t our day,” said a dejected Bruce following the match.

Men’s middleweight _ Stuart Twardzik, Big River, Sask., scored a pair of late points in the fourth round en route to a Commonwealth Youth Games gold medal, defeating over Satinder Satinder of India 5-0 in the final.

Men’s welterweight _ Ben Shamoon, Kitchener, Ont., lost the welterweight final to Balwinder Beniwal of India in a judges’ decision. The score was tied 2-2 after four rounds, but the gold medal was awarded to India.

Women’s 69 kg _  Audrey Lefèbvre of Godmanchester, Que., equaled a personal record lifting 152 kg en route to a fourth place finish. (67 kg in the snatch and 85 in the clean and jerk)

“I honestly thought that the team from India was going to be stronger in my weight class,” said Lefèbvre. “I am thrilled to begin my competitive season by winning my first international gold medal.”

Men’s 85 kg _ Mathieu Marineau of St-André-d’Argenteuil, Que., won gold by setting a new games record after lifting 130 kg in the snatch and 163 kg in the clean and jerk for a total combined score of 293 kg.
