Commonwealth Games Canada responds to federal cabinet shuffle

OTTAWA – The Commonwealth Games Association of Canada (CGC) welcomes Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s re-appointment of the Honourable Helena Guergis as the Secretary of State (Sport) and the appointments of the Honourable Josée Verner as the new Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages and the Honourable Beverley J. Oda as the Minister of International Cooperation.

“We are encouraged that the Prime Minister opted for stability in the sports ministry by keeping the Ms. Guergis as Secretary of State for Sport,” said Thomas Jones, Chief Executive Officer of CGC. “We have been working with Minister Guergis and her staff to assure that Canadian athletes reach their fullest potential on the international stage. We embrace the opportunity to build a greater understanding and awareness of the role that the Commonwealth Games play in the Canadian sport system.”

CGC also welcomes the opportunity to work with the Honourable Josée Verner, the new Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages.

“We have a prior working relationship with Minister Verner in her former role as Minister of International Cooperation and anticipate that continuing in her new role as the Minister of Canadian Heritage,” added Jones.

CGC is also impacted by the appointment of the Honourable Beverley Oda as Minister of International Cooperation, the ministry that oversees the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), a funding partner of CGC’s International Development through Sport (IDS) program.

“IDS has a close partnership with both Heritage Canada and the Ministry of International Cooperation and we look forward to meaningful discussions with both ministers and their respective staffs to further build and strengthen our international programs.”
