Silver for Cochrane, Allen at FINA World Cup

SINGAPORE – Canadians Ryan Cochrane and Coleman Allen each won a silver medal on Sunday to conclude the seventh and final stop on the FINA/Mastbank short course swimming circuit.

In the men’s 1500-m freestyle, Gergely Gyurta of Hungary held the lead from the start and won the gold medal in 14 minutes and 28.35 seconds. Cochrane, a two-time Olympic medallist from the Swimming Canada High Performance Centre-Victoria, followed in 14:35.97 and Myles Brown of South Africa was third in 14:38.80.

In the men’s 200-m individual medley, Dalya Seto of Japan was the winner in 1:54.14, Allen, from the HP Centre-Vancouver, followed in 1:56.44 and Takeharu Fujimori of Japan was third in 1:56.68. Alec Page of Victoria was fifth in 1:58.29.

Other Canadian finalists were Allen in fifth in the 100-m butterfly, Russell Wood of the University of Calgary fifth in the 200-m backstroke and eighth in the 50-m backstroke and Luke Peddie of Edmonton and Yuri Kisil, both of the HP Centre-Vancouver, seventh and eighth in the 50-m freestyle.

World championship medallist Hilary Caldwell from the HP Centre-Victoria was seventh in the women’s 100-m backstroke.
