De’Aeth, Melymick pace Canada to win over South Africa
(OTTAWA, Ont. – July 28, 2026) - Team Canada is through to the semifinals on the men’s side at the Commonwealth Games after a dominant 15-5 victory over South Africa in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
With the victory, Canada advances to the final four and will face England on Wednesday at 8 a.m. EDT. The two countries met during pool play with England picking up a 20-10 win on Sunday.
Canada controlled Tuesday’s the contest from the opening tip, using defensive pressure and balanced scoring to pull away early before closing out the convincing 10-point victory. Team Canada held South Africa to just five points on 29 per cent shooting.
Lee Melymick and Reed De'Aeth paced the Canadian attack with five points each. Melymick shot a perfect 5-for-5 while adding six rebounds. De'Aeth grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
"We did a better job of communicating,” said Melymick. “Where we need to improve is just having better timing, more chemistry with our passes; that can always be improved. If we keep up the intensity, good things will happen.”
Garrett Ostepchuk chipped in three points and four rebounds, while Kyrell Sopotyk provided two points off the bench.
Canada finished the game shooting 50 per cent from the field and won the battle on the glass, outrebounding South Africa 23-16. The
Dandeneau’s double-double leads Canada’s dominant victory over Wales
Kady Dandeneau’s double-double led Team Canada to a commanding 21-3 win over Wales in the women’s quarterfinals.
Canada will meet England in the semifinals on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. EDT with a berth in the gold medal game on the line. England edged Canada 15-12 in pool play on Sunday.
Dandeneau led the Canadian attack on Tuesday with a game-high 15 points on 12-for-18 shooting while adding 11 rebounds and four assists.
“We need to be aggressive. I feel like we’ve been coming out timid and we need to be the aggressors here,” Dandeneau explained. “We came out, and we really wanted to end the game – we were going to take it to them – and not hold back at all.
“We tried to keep up our intensity. We still have little gaps where we lose focus, lose that timing where we have to be really quick in the transition – we could still be better, but we kept up our intensity, did the job we set out to do and so that was good.”
Élodie Tessier chipped in five points and contributed three rebounds and two assists. Puisand Lai added a point and grabbed a game-high five rebounds. Rosie Long rounded out the Canadian attack, picking up two boards.
Canada was efficient offensively, converting 21 of its 39 field-goal attempts.
Team Canada dominated the rebounding battle 25-10, collecting 10 offensive rebounds to create second-chance opportunities.
