Commonwealth Games Canada congratulates Olympic bobsleigh champion Heather Moyse

Heather MoyseOTTAWA, February 25, 2010—Commonwealth Games Canada (CGC), its board of directors and staff wish to express heartfelt congratulations to Heather Moyse on winning Olympic gold.

Moyse is a former CGC intern and was elected a Member-at-Large in 2003. She and teammate Kaillie Humphries captured the gold medal in the women’s Olympic bobsleigh event at the 2010 Vancouver Games on February 24 (fellow Canadians Helen Upperton and Shelley-Ann Brown won silver).

“We were so excited to see Heather excel against the world’s best and want to congratulate her on her gold medal win,” said Thomas Jones, CEO of Commonwealth Games Canada. “The energy, perseverance and commitment that have taken Heather to the top of her sport exemplify the kinds of values reflected in organized sporting events such as the Commonwealth Games. She represents us all so incredibly well, and also brings balance and perspective through her work with Commonwealth Games Canada’s intern program.”

Moyse, a native of Summerside, P.E.I., is a great believer in the power of sport as a means of helping people discover their potential—no matter what obstacles they face. Beginning in 2001, she interned with CGC in Trinidad & Tobago as a Disability Sports Program Officer with the Canadian Sport Leadership Corps. During her time there, Moyse created Camp ABLE (Active Bodies, Leadership and Esteem), a volunteer, non-profit sport leadership development camp for deaf and hearing-impaired children from across the Caribbean. In addition to excelling in bobsleigh, Moyse is a member of Canada’s National Senior Women’s Rugby team.

“Heather not only brings tremendous focus to her sport, but also that extra dimension of giving back to the community,” said Jones. “Along with all Canadians we are tremendously proud of her.”
