Strong CGC Presence on New Government Sport Panel
A recently announced blue ribbon panel on post-2010 high performance sport has strong ties to Commonwealth Games Canada. The 5-member panel has been mandated by inister of State (Sport) Gary Lunn to make recommendations to leverage the positive momentum that has been building steadily towards the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
Three of the five panel members have clear links to CGC:
- George Heller, President of the Commonwealth Games Foundation, former President and CEO of the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, and one of CGC's most passionate supporters;
- Karen O'Neill, a visionary sport leader and a former CEO of Commonwealth Games Canada; and
- Chantal Petitclerc, one of Canada's most decorated and most respected athletes, who served as Team Canada's flag bearer at the Opening Ceremonies for the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia.
CGC will be contributing ideas and recommendations to the sport panel as it prepares a report this fall.
The first major, international multi-sport event to follow the 2010 Winter Games will be the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, from October 3 - 14, 2010.
