Two bronze medals for Canada at World Cup

EINDHOVEN, Netherlands August, 09, 2013 – Canadian swimmers collected two more bronze medals on Thursday to conclude the opening stop on the FINA World Cup circuit.

 

 

 

In the women’s 200-m butterfly, Audrey Lacroix of Pont-Rouge, Que., placed third in two minutes and 04.30 seconds. Katinka Hosszu of Hungary was the victor in 2:03.67 and Ellen Gandy of Australia second in 2:03.95.
 

 

 

Katerine Savard of Pont-Rouge, Que., was also in the final and placed sixth in 2:07.34.

 

Canada had three entries in the 4X50-m mixed freestyle relay final. Luke Peddie of Edmonton, Chris Manning of Brantford, Ont., Chantal van Landeghem of Winnipeg and Sandrine Mainville of Montreal were third in 1:31.12.

 

 

 

Australia took the gold 1:29.31 and the Netherlands was second in 1:30.46.

Savard, Blake Worsley of Victoria, Lacroix and Joel Greenshields of Lethbridge, Alta., were sixth and Coleman Allen of Vancouver, Martha McCabe of Toronto, Tommy Gossland of Vancouver and Hilary Caldwell of White Rock, B.C., were eighth.

 

Canadian record

 

 

Allen broke the Canadian short course record in a fifth place finish in the men’s 100-m butterfly clocking 50.90. That eclipsed the previous mark of 51.45 held jointly by Mike Mintenko of Moose Jaw, Sask., (2002) and Joe Bartoch of London, Ont. (2009).

 

Other Canadian men’s finalists were Russell Wood of Calgary sixth in the 200-m backstroke and Worsley eighth in the 200-m freestyle.

 

 

 

For the women, Savard and Mainville were fourth and fifth in the 50-m butterfly, Mainville and van Landeghem were fifth and seventh in the 100-m freestyle, Caldwell fifth in the 100-m backstroke and McCabe fifth in the 200-m breaststroke.

Canada ends the competition with two silver and two bronze.

 

The second stop on the circuit is Saturday and Sunday in Berlin.
