Team Canada Names Hammer Thrower Sultana Frizell as Closing Ceremony Flag Bearer

Canada finishes third in medal count at Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games

GLASGOW, Scotland, August 3, 2014 – Commonwealth Games Canada (CGC) is proud to announce that hammer thrower and gold medallist Sultana Frizell (Perth, Ont.), has been named Team Canada’s flag bearer for the Closing Ceremony at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Frizell had an outstanding performance at these Games, defending her Commonwealth title in the hammer throw from the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games and setting new Commonwealth Games records three times en route to winning gold in Glasgow.

“Not only was it an impressive performance, Sultana also displayed exceptional character on and off the field,” said Team Canada Chef de Mission, Chantal Petitclerc. “Her great attitude and leadership certainly contributed to the success of the entire Athletics Team here in Glasgow.”

"I’m delighted and honored to be carrying the flag tonight,” said Frizell. “I came here with the ambition to get the gold medal, to reclaim the gold medal from Delhi, and to set a new Games record. To be able to carry the flag in the Closing Ceremony is a dream come true.”

As of this morning, Canada has 81 medals and ranks third in the overall medal count behind England and Australia – with badminton and cycling events still to be held later today. Canada’s 31 gold, 16 silver and 34 bronze medals, so far, are an improvement over Delhi 2010 where Canada won 76 medals (25 gold, 27 silver, 33 bronze).

Canada reclaimed third place in the medal standings in Glasgow after finishing fourth behind host nation India four years ago in Delhi.

“We came here with a goal to provide a high quality environment so athletes and coaches could do their job and perform exceptionally well,” said Scott Stevenson, Director of Sport for CGC. “We did that. In terms of overall medal count, we were right on target, hoping to finish among the top three and we are particularly pleased with the increase in both total medal count and gold medal performances. I’d like to congratulate Team Canada and thank Scotland for hosting such a spectacular Games.”

The next Commonwealth Games will be in Gold Coast, Australia, April 4 to 15, 2018.
