Olympic and Commonwealth Games gold medalist, Glenroy Gilbert, joins Edmonton 2022 Bid Committee

Athlete and coaching expertise adds depth to Edmonton 2022 team

Edmonton 2022 is excited to announce Glenroy Gilbert as Head, Athletes Commission. In his new role, Gilbert will use his know-how to represent the interests of the athletes and bring his unique experience to the Edmonton bid.

The former Canadian Olympian boasts an impressive resume in Athletics that includes gold medals in the 4x100m relay from the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, 1995 and 1997 World Championships and 1995 Pan American Games. Additionally, he won a gold medal at the 1994 Commonwealth Games and a silver at the 1998 Commonwealth Games.

Since retiring from competition, Gilbert has coached the Canadian 4x100 m team, worked for CBC radio in Ottawa, Canada and is currently serving on the Canadian Paralympic Committee as Senior Coordinator of games, preparation, performance and enhancements. Edmonton 2022 looks forward to the great insight and value that Gilbert will bring.

"When you want to achieve excellence, you need to work with champions and that is exactly what Glenroy brings. We are very excited to have him on our team."

The Commonwealth Games is a multi-sport event that currently features 10 core sports which includes Athletics. Host cities can then choose up to seven additional sports from a pre-set list to round out the action.

The City’s bid must be submitted to the Commonwealth Games Federation on March 2, 2015; however, a decision on the successful host city will not be announced until September 2, 2015.
