Canadian Commonwealth Sport Awards

Sport with Social Purpose

OBJECTIVES:
  1. To Celebrate and honor individuals and organizations who have made a significant contribution to the Commonwealth sport movement in Canada and/or abroad
  2. To Increase the Canadian public’s awareness of the Commonwealth sport movement and Commonwealth Sport Canada, and
  3. To Provide a vehicle for fundraising.
AWARD CATEGORIES:

VOLUNTEER EXCELLENCE (Award of Merit (Builder)):  An individual who has made distinguished, lasting and valuable contributions to furthering the aims and objectives of Commonwealth Sport Canada (CSC) and the Commonwealth Sport Canada Foundation (CSCF), both domestically and internationally.  Builder nominees may be either active or inactive at the time of their consideration.

SPORT & SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT EXCELLENCE (SportWORKS Award):  (formerly known as CSDP or IDS (Commonwealth Sport Development Program or International Development Sport Program)) An individual recognized for their exceptional contributions during their international or domestic placement with CSC. The award is presented to a Canadian SportWORKS Officer who has made a significant contribution to the development of sport. Recipient selection for this award is based on the nominee’s contribution to the development of sport (at any level) in Commonwealth countries around the world (including Canada), especially as it relates to CSC’s values of humanity, equality, and destiny.

SPORT EXCELLENCE (Athlete & Coach Award):  Recognizes and celebrates outstanding athletic and coaching performances at the last Commonwealth Games!

PARTNERSHIP EXCELLENCE (Outstanding Partner Award):  Serves to recognize the extraordinary support provided to CSC/CSCF by a valued, external organization.  Without that support, CSC/CSCF could not meet its goals.

AWARD CELEBRATIONS

Awards will be presented and celebrated as part of the National Awards Gala held in conjunction with CSC’s face-to-face Annual General Meeting (AGM) in even-numbered years.

Each award recipient may be accompanied by one guest, with reasonable attendance expenses covered by CSC/CSCF. In the event an award is presented posthumously, a close family member or other appropriate representative will be invited to attend on behalf of the recipient.

Where a recipient is unable to attend or be represented at the National Awards Gala, CSC will make appropriate arrangements to ensure the award is formally presented and the recipient’s contribution is appropriately recognized. The Manager, Programs & Operations, or their designate, will coordinate the delivery and presentation of the award.

Recognition Memorabilia

CSC will maintain a dedicated Awards Recipients page on its website to recognize and preserve the legacy of award recipients. The page will include the recipient’s name, award category and year of recognition, along with an appropriate profile, photograph, video citation and/or biography, where available and appropriate.

Each award recipient will receive a Certificate of Recognition and a commemorative gift in recognition of their achievement and contribution to the Commonwealth Sport movement. The gift may take a variety of forms, such as a Games photo collage, commemorative item, donation to a charity of the recipient’s choice, or another meaningful form of recognition.

The approximate value of the commemorative gift will be determined annually through CSC’s budgeting process, taking into consideration available resources and the nature of the award.

REMOVAL AND REVOCATION PROCESS

The CSC Board of Directors may revoke an award where, in its determination, an award recipient’s subsequent conduct is sufficiently serious and materially undermines the integrity, credibility or reputation of Commonwealth Sport Canada (CSC) or the Commonwealth Sport movement.

Circumstances that may warrant consideration of revocation may include, but are not limited to:

  • a criminal conviction for conduct that is relevant to the integrity or reputation of CSC or the Commonwealth Sport movement;
  • serious misconduct or other conduct that materially undermines the credibility, integrity or values of CSC; or
  • an official sanction or disciplinary finding by a court, regulatory or adjudicative body, professional association, sport organization or other recognized authority.

Revocation will be considered on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the nature and seriousness of the conduct, the circumstances, the relevance to the award and CSC’s values and reputation, and any applicable appeal or review processes.

The formal decision to revoke an award rests with the CSC Board of Directors. Where an award is revoked, CSC may remove the recipient from its Awards Recipients records and discontinue public recognition of the award, as appropriate.
