Canada wins first two medals in Weightlifting

Ann-Sophie Taschereau

Canada opened its medal count in weightlifting at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on July 27, winning a silver and a bronze during the sport’s second day of competition in Glasgow.

Women’s 58kg – Ann-Sophie Taschereau

Ann-Sophie Taschereau, from Plessisville, Quebec, entered the snatch competition with the highest posted opening weight at 93kg. On her first attempt, now at 94kg, she was unsuccessful. After a second unsuccessful attempt at 94kg, Taschereau’s competition was on the line. She successfully completed the 94kg lift on her third attempt to advance to the clean and jerk. Her successful lift set a new Commonwealth Games record, although Nigeria's Rafiatu Lawal surpassed it on her subsequent attempts. Still, Taschereau sat comfortably in second.

Taschereau began the clean and jerk portion with a successful 111kg lift. She followed it up with another successful lift at 115kg. In her third attempt, Taschereau went big with a 121kg lift and successfully completed it for a new personal best. That brought her total to 215kg, which earned her the silver medal.

“We have worked really hard to perform here, qualify and do the bars that we did, so I am very happy with the progress we have made so far,” said Taschereau. “I want to thank everyone back home for their support, I can’t wait to be back in Canada!”

Women’s 53kg – Rebeka Groulx

Rebeka Groulx, from Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, Quebec, earned Canada's bronze medal in the women's 53kg competition. Groulx started the snatch competition with a successful lift at 78kg. She followed it up with successful lifts at 81kg and at 83kg to sit third after the snatch portion of the competition.

In the clean and jerk, she began with a 95kg lift and was successful. She made two attempts at 99kg but was unable to complete either lift. She finished with a combined total of 178kg to earn the bronze medal.

“Winning this medal represents all the hard work I have put in this year. I couldn’t be more proud to represent my country like this on the international stage,” said Groulx after the competition.

Other Canadian results included Shad Darsigny, who finished fourth at 79kg; Matt Darsigny, who finished sixth at 71kg; and Antonin Lanoue, who finished fifth at 60kg on July 26.

Weightlifting continues tomorrow (July 28) with a trio of Canadians in action, including Braydon Kennedy at 88kg, Charlotte Simoneau at 69kg, and two-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist Maude Charron at 63kg. The first session begins at 9:30 a.m. Glasgow time.
